“Wabi-sabi is the quintessential Japanese aesthetic. It is a beauty
of things imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete. It is a beauty of things
modest and humble. It is a beauty of things unconventional…”
I am inspired by this concept and seek to replicate the beauty found in
time-worn surfaces, like those on old buildings, on sidewalks, and walls.
I notice how, after years of exposure to the elements, they become
transformed. Paint peels away to reveal former colors, textures. Varied
coloration, layers of random imprints, embedded debris, and fossilized
traces capture my imagination. On concrete sidewalks and walkways, I find
hidden markings, bits of scrap intriguingly scattered.
I experience this work as a playful experiment, one that takes me away
from my academic roots into a world of innumerable possibilities, i.e. the
use of collage: photocopies of earlier works, of worn doors, scraps of
newsprint and calligraphy to add dimension and intrigue.
